State Senator Elected President of the Indian Waters Council, Boy Scouts of America

COLUMBIA, SC –  April 21, 2009 – The Indian Waters Council, Boy Scouts of America has announced the election of State Senator Brad Hutto (D –District 40) as its Council President, the top volunteer position in the organization of nearly 10,000 youth members and 2,000 adult Scouting volunteers in the Midlands Region.

Senator Hutto has a long history of service to Scouting, having grown up in the program in Orangeburg and earning its highest achievement as a youth, the Eagle Scout Award. His election by the Executive Board of the Indian Waters Council marks a culmination of nearly 30 years of adult volunteer leadership to the Scouting program in the region.

Senator Hutto led a youth “Explorer” mentoring program in the legal profession for several years, and has chaired several fundraising endeavors for the Scouts. He has also given strong leadership to a local Cub Scout pack and Boy Scout troop in Orangeburg, helping to ensure Scouting is accessible and relevant to families of all backgrounds.  Scouting’s honor camping program, the Order of the Arrow, has also been the beneficiary of Senator Hutto’s leadership as both a youth member and a volunteer, where he has been involved both regionally and nationally.

For his leadership and especially his efforts to promote Scouting to underserved youth, Senator Hutto was honored with the Whitney M. Young Service Award as well as the Silver Beaver Award by the Boy Scouts of America.

Senator Hutto is an attorney in Orangeburg and is a guest professor at the USC Honors College.  Since 1996 he has served  Allendale, Bamburg, Barnwell and Orangeburg counties in the South Carolina Senate.  Senator Hutto has championed legislation concerning children’s health issues, alcohol and drug treatment, victim’s rights and highway safety. He was named “Senator of the Year” by the South Carolina Association of Counties and is the recipient of the “Distinguished Service Award” from the Municipal Association of South Carolina.

Senator Hutto comes from a family of Scouting leaders, including his wife, Tracy who is a longtime Cub Scout volunteer, and his Eagle Scout son, Skyler, who will be a freshman at Vanderbilt University this fall.
