Help us help the Lowcountry Food Bank feed the hungry
October 31, 2012Throughout November
CHARLESTON, SC – Bring one or more non-perishable healthy food items to Magnolia Plantation and Gardens throughout November and receive $5 off the general garden admission.
This special discount is being offered to assist the Lowcountry Food Bank’s mission to serve as a clearinghouse for donated food. Founded in 1983, the food bank feeds the needy in ten coastal South Carolina counties by soliciting and distributing healthy food and grocery products to nonprofit agencies.
For this project, Magnolia is also working in association with the Venturing Crew 1676 of the Boy Scouts of America. Food collected at Magnolia will be turned over to the Crew for delivery to the food bank’s headquarters on Azalea Avenue in Charleston.
Tom Johnson, Magnolia’s executive director, said, “The recession has affected many Lowcountry families in recent years, however, many of us are still better situated than others and are able to feed our families. November is a time of thanksgiving so help us make a difference in Charleston.
“This initiative is also important to defray the cost of bringing healthy food to needy people who because of their incomes don’t always have the ability to afford the more costly healthy food options.” Food will be collected beginning Thursday, Nov. 1 through Friday, Nov. 30. This $5 off the general garden admission will apply to adult and children admission prices to the gardens. The discount will only be in affect from Nov. 1 through Nov. 30 with the donation of one or more non-perishable food item. The discount does not apply to admission to guided and unguided tours.
The healthy foods that support the Food Bank’s nutritional initiative are:Protein products such as peanut butter, canned chicken, salmon and tuna in water.Dried lentils and beans.Cereals (hot and cold), 100 percent whole grain cereals and brown rice. Low or no salt, low and sugar free canned fruits and vegetables, Snacks such as dried fruit and reduced or sugar free cookies.
