Roper St. Francis is Firing Up for Next Smoking Cessation Program

October 27, 2010

CHARLESTON, SC – November 16, 2010 –  Smoking cigarettes causes an estimated 20 percent of all deaths in the United States.  If you’re among the 50 million Americans who smoke, Roper St. Francis Healthcare is ready to help you become one less statistic through its upcoming Smoking Cessation Program.

The majority of smokers know smoking is a health risk, but may not know that smoking is the number one cause of preventable disease and death in the United States, said Amy Levine, an instructor for the program at Roper St. Francis Healthcare.

The program is based on the QuitSmart system developed at Duke University Medical Center and boasts a 12-month non-relapse rate of 60 percent, Levine said.

Led by a comprehensively trained staff, the Roper St. Francis Smoking Cessation Program is a three-part series completed over three sessions.  Each session lasts 60-90 minutes and includes relaxation audiotapes, cigarette substitutes and stress management techniques.

The cost of the program is $25 and is offered from 6-7 p.m. on the following dates:

·         Tuesday, November 16

·         Tuesday, November 30

·         Tuesday, December 7

Classes are held at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital, 2095 Henry Tecklenburg Dr. in West Ashley.  For more information or to register, please call 402-CARE (2273).
