Groundbreaking ceremony held for Ashley River Crossing Pedestrian and Bike Bridge

January 9, 2025

A major step forward in Charleston’s infrastructure was marked on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, as city officials and community leaders gathered for the groundbreaking of the Ashley River Crossing. This stand-alone pedestrian and bicycle bridge will provide a connection between West Ashley and downtown Charleston, offering a safe, affordable, and equitable transportation option for cyclists and pedestrians. With West Ashley home to nearly half of the region’s population and the downtown peninsula hosting a dense concentration of businesses, including the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), the bridge is expected to significantly improve mobility for residents and workers alike.

The Ashley River Crossing represents a transformative investment in sustainable infrastructure, expected to reduce vehicle dependence and enhance accessibility. Over the next 30 years, officials project the bridge will save approximately 66,000 vehicle miles, alleviating traffic congestion and contributing to environmental benefits. By prioritizing pedestrian and bicycle safety, the project underscores Charleston’s commitment to fostering a more connected, livable city. As construction begins, residents can look forward to a new era of mobility that bridges not only physical distance but also economic and social divides.
