A Fashion Show at the City Gallery at Waterfront Park!

January 31, 2011

CHARLESTON, SC – The City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs in conjunction with Heather Koonse of the Rose Knot,  present A Fashion Show at the City Gallery at Waterfront Park March 5, 2011 at 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.  A Fashion Show will feature designs by Heather Koonse, Michael Wierniki, Shelley Smith, Erin Perkins, Kim Hines and Margaret Chandler! This event has a $10 admission fee and is open to the public.

A Fashion Show is a collaboration of six local clothing designers.  Their purpose is to present a non-traditional fashion show that challenges the audience to consider what it means to adorn oneself.  Bold imaginative presentations of each ensemble promise to challenge the narrowly defined cultural standards of beauty.  A Fashion Show will highlight the potential for fashion to provoke thought and emotion about image and identity.

Conceptual designs inspired by line, color, texture, and historical costume, will be employed to illustrate handcrafted clothing as wearable works of art and not as a disposable commodity. The City Gallery provides a perfect setting to showcase such a collection.  The interior structure lends itself to the non-linear presentation which is essential to the concept behind A Fashion Show.  By breaking away from the traditional runway convention, A Fashion Show aims to highlight the theatricality of our world, rather than create a theatre separated from our world

A Fashion Show will build on an already existing foundation to expand Charleston as a center of creativity and forward thinking in fashion and style. – Heather Koonse, The Rose Knot.

PARTICIPATING ARTISTS:

Heather Koonse
Heather’s collection will incorporate hand knits, sheer silks, and glass to create curious silhouettes.   Heather experiments with surface design to create unique textures and forms.

Erin Perkins
Erin takes her inspiration from light and nature, old movies and punk rock.  Her spring looks are modern interpretations of vintage looks. The pieces are effortlessly wearable and classically covetable.

Shelly Smith
The majority of Shelley Smith’s designs are avant-garde. She loves to experiment with unusual silhouettes to create garments that are more artistic than functional. For Shelley inspiration can evolve from anything and everything.

Michael Wierniki
Michael’s work depicts an idiosyncratic vision of the future which retains all the best qualities of early human civilization. He strives to create balance through intensely contrasting colors and patterns.
