ArtWalk on Thursday, July 16, to Showcase New Art

Spartanburg’s monthly ArtWalk will be Thursday, July 16, 5-9 p.m., and many of the local galleries and museums will have new exhibits for the public to see. ArtWalk is the third Thursday of every month. Many of the art galleries and museums in and near downtown Spartanburg stay open late so that patrons can see what is new on the local art scene. Many of them have wine-and-cheese type refreshments, receptions, and special programs. There is no cost to attend. The participating galleries are as follows:

“Coming Home” This exhibition features a selection of works that serve as powerful visual representations of the concept of home. Paintings by artists such as Alfred Hutty, Harrison Cady, William Halsey, Gilbert Gaul, and Rudolph Ingerle, among others, conjure memories of one’s own travels leading to a place of comforting familiarity, evoking a sense of peace that is at once palpable and profound.

Bridget Kirkland, digital artist and graphic designer, will discuss her work during the reception, 5-8 p.m. Kirkland uses her design and photography skills to create work that “recalls memories and interprets through image design.”

Ella McBee Smith Cart (Mrs. Ben Montgomery Cart) is a multi-award winning artist and gallery owner originally from Spartanburg, now living in Saint Simon Island, GA. She is a graduate of Columbia College and former art professor. Her paintings are images of Low Country landscapes, abstracts and florals utilizing mixed media and oils. There will be an opening reception provided by Palmetto Palate 5:30-9 p.m. Cart will not be present during ArtWalk.

“Pot Boiler” is a group exhibition featuring the work of nine artists. This varied and playful exhibition includes a collection of images and objects that range from surreal photographs of toys to large installations to performance-based work that activates viewer participation. What appears to be an almost childlike innocence in imagery and objects has metaphorical undertones that resonate in our personal and collective imaginations. Opening reception will be 5-8 p.m. This exhibit runs July 16-September 17.

Anne Stewart is a fine art and nature photographer who spends her time looking for unique visions to share the sense of child-like wonder she experiences when immersed in her photography. She loves color and unique perspectives although there are times when black and white images screams for attention.

Patrons are invited to create their own still-life displays and then capture their creations via of their own cell phone cameras. The gallery will be provide a wide variety of props, such as vases, fruits, flowers, and fabrics, that guests can arrange into photo-perfect arrangements. In addition, the gallery will provide frames that can held on front of the creations for picture taking. No cost to participate. Wine-and-cheese type refreshments provided.

The Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg Gallery will host an art exhibit by members of the New Day Clubhouse for the month of July. The opening reception will be during ArtWalk 4-7 p.m. New Day Clubhouse is a day facility for adults dealing with mental illness that helps them learn skills to integrate themselves into society and to deal with issues related to mental illness.

Photos by Jimmy Gibson will be on display in the West Wing hallway gallery at Chapman Cultural Center. Gibson is a volunteer photographer for Chapman. His photos are very diverse in techniques and subject matter.
