Brookgreen Gardens’ Harvest Home Weekend Festival, October 13 & 14

October 3, 2012

More Entertainment, More Scarecrows, More Animals and More Fun!

MURRELLS INLET, SC – Brookgreen’s annual fall festival hours are 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and the weekend is a weekend filled with outdoor activities the whole family will enjoy.

This year, the kids will love some of the new activities and the music group, Susana and Timmy Abell, who offer dynamic and highly engaging performances centered around a repertoire of original songs and stories. Their concerts include a puppet performance that has captivated audiences across the country, as well as storytelling, and award-winning music. They will alternate performances with ‘Down Home’ a popular local duo with Doug Fankhauser (guitar) and Robert Napier (fiddle) who will play traditional and modern bluegrass music.

At the Welcome Center lawn area, we will have everyone’s favorite activities such as scarecrow building, pumpkin painting, hayrides, food, and live music. Plus, there will be pottery, soap making, and sweet grass baskets weaving demonstrations both days, along with displays of Lowcountry Bottle Trees. On Saturday, author Sherman Carmichael will sign copies of his books ‘Legends and Lore of South Carolina’ and ‘Forgotten Tales of South Carolina’ and Robert McAlister will be here both afternoons and to sign copies of his book ‘Wooden Ships on Winyah Bay’. You will also have a chance to taste samples of honey from Savannah Bee Company.

In the Lowcountry Zoo area we will have an additional hayride, crafts – pine cone bird feeders and yarn craft (god’s eyes), kids (temporary) tattoos, snack tent, roving ‘meet the animals’ and sheep wool spinning demonstrations.

New this year – Jerry Walls, naturalist, professional bird guide, and co-star of the television show Carolina Safari, will present educational and interactive programs featuring his collection of live animals.
