CCSD Trustees approve contract with Dr. Eric Gallien to serve as Superintendent

The Charleston County School District (CCSD) Board of Trustees announced that Dr. Eric N. Gallien has been named the district’s next Superintendent of Schools. The Board approved Dr. Gallien’s contract with a 6-3 vote. He will assume the duties of Superintendent on July 1, 2023.

Dr. Eric Gallien was the only candidate to receive a unanimous 9-0 vote for a second in-person interview. After a second interview and a day in the district, Dr. Gallien received a 6-2 vote to proceed with contract negotiations.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Gallien to CCSD,” said Board Chair Pam McKinney. “His decades of successful leadership in public education and record of service in the United States Marine Corps will serve him well as he leads our district into the future.”

Dr. Gallien comes to Charleston from Racine Unified School District in Racine, WI. He brings a wealth of experience and leadership to CCSD, having previously served as Regional Director of School Support in Milwaukee Public Schools, Deputy Superintendent at Racine, and Superintendent there since 2018.

Dr. Gallien began his career as an educational assistant and became a teacher in both middle and high schools. He demonstrated strong leadership as a principal at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, establishing a track record of success as a dynamic instructional leader and an administrator who firmly stands on the philosophy of students first.

Dr. Gallien earned his doctorate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. He earned two Master of Arts degrees from Alverno College in Curriculum Development and Educational Leadership. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in History Education. As noted above, Dr. Gallien also served in the United States Marine Corps, seeing combat in Operation Desert Storm.

Dr. Gallien is the proud father of two daughters and three sons, as well as five grandchildren.
