CEO of Walmart participating in Citadel’s leadership symposium

CHARLESTON, SC – Considered one of the world’s most powerful people, the president and CEO of Walmart will serve on a panel that will discuss Ethics in Business during The Citadel’s Annual Principled Leadership Symposium. Ethics in Business is one of numerous panels featuring national industry leaders discussing their experiences and professional opinions about ethics as applied to their professions. Doug McMillon is one of six panelists for the business discussion which will be held at 1 p.m. on March 12 in Bond Hall, room 165. All of the leadership symposium panels are open to the community.
As CEO, McMillon leads approximately 1.4 million employees in the United States alone. Under his leadership, the company is bringing together its stores, logistics network, and digital commerce capabilities in new ways to empower customers to shop whenever, wherever, and however they want supporting Walmart’s mission of “saving people money so they can live better.”
From 2009 to 2014, McMillon served as president and CEO of Walmart International, a fast-growing segment of Walmart’s overall operations with stores in 26 countries outside the United States. From 2006 to 2009, he served as president and CEO of Sam’s Club, an operating segment of Walmart, with sales of more than $46 billion annually during his tenure.
During the discussion, panelists will deliberate on the ethical issues many face in professional settings. The panelists include the following business leaders:
- Dr. William “Bill” Trumbull, dean of The Citadel School of Business
- Harvey Schiller, a 1960 Citadel graduate and CEO of Global Options Group
- Dr. Richard M. Ebeling, recently appointed BB&T Distinguished Professor of Ethics and Free Enterprise Leadership at The Citadel
- Clemson Turregano, a 1983 Citadel graduate and director of the Center for Creative Leadership across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa
- Nancy Mace, a 1999 Citadel graduate and commercial realtor, author, and former marketing executive
The Citadel’s Principled Leadership Symposium is a nationally lauded event held in conjunction with Corps Day Weekend each year. It is a student-centered conference focusing on leadership and ethics that is open to all students at The Citadel, alumni, faculty and staff and the public. Approximately 80 invited delegates from the U.S. Military Academies, senior military colleges, and local colleges also attend. This year’s theme is Principled Leadership as Honor: The Code, The Medal, The Ethos.
