Charleston Animal Society Animals Coming Downtown for SEWE

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC – February 14-17, 2013 – Charleston Animal Society will have animals available for adoption on King Street in downtown Charleston from Thursday, February 14th – Sunday, February 17th during the Southeast Wildlife Exposition (SEWE). The Old Millennium Building at 372 King St. will serve as its “home base” throughout SEWE.  M Dumas and Sons will also be hosting dogs from the Charleston Animal Society in the window of their store at 294 King St.

Thanks to the generosity of NAI Avant Commercial Real Estate and Werner Real Estate Holdings, dogs and cats will be available for adoption at the Old Millennium Building on the corner of King and Calhoun Streets. Charleston Animal Society will also be selling items with the organization’s logo and will feature local original art to benefit the shelter’s programs.

For the fourth consecutive year, M Dumas and Sons is graciously providing use of its storefront at the corner of King and Society streets to display dogs for adoption. In addition to helping dogs find new homes, M Dumas and Sons has offered to match all donations up to $1,000 made to Charleston Animal Society during the adoption event.

Volunteers with Charleston Animal Society will also be walking “Society Dogs” from the shelter during SEWE. These dogs will be available for adoption through adoption counselors based at 372 King St.

Founded 138 years ago in the heart of downtown Charleston, the mission of Charleston Animal Society is to prevent cruelty to animals by finding homes for homeless animals, containing outbreaks of rabies and other deadly diseases, reuniting lost pets with their families, fighting hunger when food is unaffordable, teaching children to be kind to animals and each other, and saving the lives of abused, abandoned and unwanted animals.

As Charleston’s largest animal rescue organization, Charleston Animal Society cares for 90% of Charleston County’s unwanted, abused and abandoned animals, yet continues to drive down the Charleston community’s euthanasia rate. In 2012, it spent over $500,000 treating animals, and saved nearly 75% of all the animals that came to the shelter, making it the leader among large animal shelters in South Carolina and a national model.

Charleston Animal Society is also the state’s largest spay/neuter provider. Its spay/neuter programs sterilized over 11,000 animals last year, which made a significant dent in the community’s animal overpopulation problem.

Additionally, Charleston Animal Society is South Carolina’s number one adoption provider, has the state’s most successful Community Cat Trap-Neuter-Return Program, and a nationally recognized Veterinary Science Initiative with high school students.  By staying firmly focused on its mission, Charleston Animal Society saves more animals than all other animal organizations in Charleston County combined.

Charleston Animal Society was recently selected Nonprofit of the Year at the annual “Giving Back Awards” gala sponsored by Charleston Magazine and the Coastal Community Foundation. It was also named a top-rated charity organization by Charity Navigator, the nation’s largest charity watchdog organization.
