City of Charleston Hurricane Dorian September 9 recovery efforts update

Garbage resumed normal operations today. Due to the large volume of garbage, crews are working overtime to collect as much as possible, but some Monday routes may not be completed by the end of the day. Crews will pick up where they left off before beginning Tuesday’s routes tomorrow, so citizens whose garbage is not collected today should leave their cans out for collection tomorrow.

City trash crews continued collecting storm debris throughout the city yesterday and today.  As of 4:30 p.m., more than 150 truckloads of debris had been collected from neighborhoods. Crews will continue to collect until 7 p.m. tonight and will resume in the morning.

There is a contract in place for assistance with debris collection on Daniel Island in Berkeley County, and the contractor will begin this week.

The city is in the process of hiring a contractor to assist with the collection of storm debris in Charleston County. Once the contractor begins work later this week, a rough schedule of where collection will take place will be released. Until then, city crews will continue efforts to collect throughout the city.

Citizens are reminded that leaves need to be bagged in paper lawn and refuse bags for collection, as loose leaves clog storm drains.

The normal street sweeping schedule is on hold for two weeks, while street sweeping crews continue to focus on storm cleanup.

All city traffic lights are now operational.

Stormwater crews continue to focus on clearing storm drains and ditches of debris from the storm.

All Recreation facilities and programs are open and running as normal, except for the Municipal Golf Course.  The driving range, putting greens and clubhouse are open, but the course remains closed until further notice.

Due to the number of downed trees, Angel Oak Road, and therefore Angel Oak Park, are closed until further notice.

The Parks Department continues to work to clean up the city’s more than 120 city parks. Hundreds of city trees are being assessed for damage and prioritized for work. Citizens are asked to continue to report damage to the citizen services line at 843-724-7311.
