SPARTANBURG, SC – May 5, 2011 – In partnership with Clemson University, the City of Spartanburg introduces Spartanburg Academy for Innovative Youth Leadership (SAIYL).   SAIYL replaces the City’s former Summer Youth Institute program.  Clemson has developed a curriculum that will combine work, education, and motivational aspects that introduce young people to the work of local government and community.

The Office of Community Services will work with high schools to identify potential candidates and offer 12 rising 10th graders the opportunity to participate in this Youth Leadership program for seven weeks this summer.  In order to be considered for this program, a student must meet the following criteria:

  •  A recommendation from their guidance counselor
  • No disciplinary problems
  • The ability to describe a problem in the community and how it could be addressed
  • An interest in learning more about public leadership and how government works

The program will run from June 13th through July 29th, Monday thru Friday, 8am – 5pm.  Students who successfully complete the program will receive a $1,000 scholarship to the school of their choice and a laptop computer.  Interested students should contact their Guidance Counselor for an application.  Applications will be accepted through May 13.
