Congressman Clyburn Announces Positive Developments on Charleston Port Study

April 25, 2011 – House Assistant Democratic Leader andSixth District Congressman James E. Clyburn announced today that he hasreceived a status update that is very encouraging regarding theCharleston Port.  He is hopeful that funding for the Charleston Portstudy will be included in the Army Corps of Engineers’ operating planfor the remainder of the fiscal year, which is expected to be publishedin the coming weeks.

“The indications that I have received from the Vice President’soffice are very positive, and I look forward to having the funding forthe Charleston Port study resolved in the coming weeks,”  CongressmanClyburn.  “I appreciate the support from the White House for our efforts to ensure the Charleston Port remains a vital economic engine for South Carolina well into the future.”

Congressman Clyburn began working with the Vice President and highranking Administration officials to secure port funding when it becameclear that there was not a legislative solution.  He had previouslyincluded funding for a deepening study multiple times as an earmark inthe FY’11 budget, but the earmarks were rejected by the Senate due toSenator DeMint’s objection.
