Fountain Inn Police Department Receives SRO funding from State

June 26, 2023

The Fountain Inn Police Department has been awarded $177,575 in funding for a school resource officer (SRO) for Fountain Inn Elementary. This development promises to provide a safer learning environment for students and peace of mind for parents and faculty alike.

“We are proud to say that our local officers are stationed as SROs at Fountain Inn High School, Rudolph Gordon School, and now Fountain Inn Elementary. This presence is important not only for the safety of our students and staff, but also helps build connections between our city and our community,” said Fountain Inn Mayor GP McCleer. “I’m also happy to report that we were able to leverage state dollars to fully fund this new position, helping save our city, and the school district, money. Paired with an additional $20,000 grant for armored vests, our Police Department has secured nearly $200,000 in grant funds this year alone to ensure increased safety for our residents, of all ages.”

This funding enables the Fountain Inn Police Department to assign a dedicated officer to Fountain Inn Elementary, significantly enhancing the school’s safety measures. The appointed SRO will serve as a key resource for students, parents, and staff, working proactively to maintain a secure learning environment. The presence of a School Resource Officer goes beyond security concerns. The SRO will actively engage with students, building trust and providing guidance, mentorship, and educational support.

This grant comes from the South Carolina School Resource Officer (SRO) Program. The goal of the program is to put SROs in all South Carolina schools. Funds are used to hire certified law enforcement officers to serve as SROs. Grants cover one hundred percent of costs including salary, benefits, equipment, vehicles, and more. This grant spans one year but is expected to be awarded annually.
