Gary Pope Jr., Public Finance Attorney, named new member at Pope Flynn

April 6, 2016

Gary Pope Jr. has been named a new member at Pope Flynn, a Columbia-based law firm concentrating in public finance and governmental law, effective April of 2016. Pope will continue his practice in the field of public finance, serving as bond counsel, disclosure counsel, and issuer’s counsel for public entities issuing municipal bonds. He regularly advises counties, cities, and special purpose districts, as well as the State of South Carolina and several of its public universities, in connection with their debt offerings and public-private partnerships. Pope joined the firm as an associate attorney in 2010, after completing a clerkship with the Honorable Joseph F. Anderson, Jr, of the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina.

“Pope Flynn has grown steadily since its founding in 2008,” said Joe Lucas, one of the managing members of the firm, “both through bringing in new attorneys and through our associate attorneys. Gary is the second associate attorney we have named a member of the firm, and we greatly appreciate the depth of knowledge and experience he has gained over the years. Gary has lived with a rich heritage of service to South Carolina in public finance law, but it’s his hard work and the level of focused service that he brings our clients that have stood out as valuable assets.”

“It’s not easy to grow up with two lawyers as parents,” said Margaret Pope, founding member of Pope Flynn. “And it’s certainly not easy to work in the same firm with a parent who has spent her career in South Carolina public finance. Gary could have pursued any number of interests following his clerkship, but I’m very grateful for his choice to work in public finance law and at Pope Flynn. When I look at both our firm’s younger attorneys and our more seasoned experienced attorneys, I am very pleased with the highly-focused team that we have built over eight years. That focus on public finance is a rare thing in a law firm.”

Pope received both his JD from the University of South Carolina School of Law and his International MBA from the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina in 2009. He received his BA in political science from The University of the South.

Pope, a graduate of Leadership Columbia, will continue to serve clients out of the Columbia office, as well as provide additional service to Upstate clients from Pope Flynn’s Spartanburg office. Since its founding in 2008, Pope Flynn has grown from three attorneys to nine, all concentrating in public finance and governmental law. The firm has offices in Columbia, SC, Spartanburg, SC, and Charlotte, NC.

With offices in Columbia, SC, Charlotte, NC and Spartanburg, SC, Pope Flynn represents cities and towns, counties, special purpose districts, school districts, state institutions, hospitals, colleges and universities, and other public entities, as well as private entities, including banks, underwriters, and nonprofit institutions.
