Hotel Trundle announces expansion onto Main Street in Downtown Columbia, South Carolina

Hotel Trundle, the locally-owned, award-winning boutique hotel that has redefined hospitality in downtown Columbia, South Carolina, has announced plans to grow. The family-owned hotel will expand its offerings with the Flutter Wing, a new block of rooms that will be located on Main Street, just around the corner from the original, flagship hotel.

Situated at 1544 Main Street on the second floor of a historic, two-story building located directly across the street from the celebrated Columbia Museum of Art, the Flutter Wing is slated to open in Spring 2023. It will feature an outdoor patio and five hotel-style guest rooms, one of which will be a spacious bridal suite.
In 2018, the 41-room Hotel Trundle opened its doors, ushering in a new era of posh-yet-affordable lodging in the thriving Main Street corridor, which is home to a continuously growing, diverse community of local shops, restaurants, cultural attractions and entertainment venues. Offering affordable rates competitive with area chain hotels, Hotel Trundle provides guests with a bespoke, personal experience filled with thoughtful details, from art commissioned by local creatives to hip, urbane décor that prioritizes comfort and aesthetics.
Owned by husband-and-wife team Rita Patel and Marcus Munse, both veteran hoteliers, Hotel Trundle’s mid-century eclectic style and art deco-inspired design have attracted the attention of local and national publications, such as Atlanta Magazine, the Travel Channel, Travel + Leisure and Cuisine Noir. It is the first and only Columbia hotel to be featured in the Southern Living Hotel Collection. In 2021, Hotel Trundle was named one of the 10 best historic hotels in America in the USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards.
“We are introducing a new way to experience Hotel Trundle, continuing our practice of partnering with as many local Columbia businesses as possible,” says Patel, a well-known ambassador for tourism in the region. “The Flutter Wing will have a modern but dreamy style with European flair; rooms will be Instagram-worthy while celebrating all of the historical details that make the space so charming.”
Just as Hotel Trundle is a renovation and adaptive reuse of historic downtown buildings, the Flutter Wing, leased from building owners Matthew Bridges and Daniel Boan, will bring a historic space back to life. Architecture services will be provided by Architectural Concepts, and Don Blackstone Construction will perform the build-out. POND Interiors will provide interior design services in collaboration with Patel and Munse, who take an active role in determining the look and feel of their spaces.
The Flutter Wing will occupy just over 2500 square feet in addition to a 540 square-foot patio. In the past, the building was home to small businesses such as Duffie’s Bookstore (c. 1868-1912), Mayfair Beauty Salon (c. 1937), Darling Beauty Salon, (c. 1938), Cannon Shoe Store (c. 1938), and Marilyn’s Slipper Shop (c. 1941), per Janie Campbell, preservation consultant at Rogers Lewis Jackson Mann & Quinn.
The design scheme is similar to that of Hotel Trundle, but the intent is to create an even more intimate feel, with deep, inviting colors, original hardwood floors, and preserved light wells that will provide an ambient sky glow. The bridal suite will feature a separate vanity area with lighting designed specifically to benefit makeup application. The space overlooks a tree-lined, central section of historic Main Street.
Flutter Wing guests will enjoy separate, key fob entry to the new space, a dedicated parking space on site as well as a valet parking option, and various Hotel Trundle amenities, including a complimentary local craft beer or hand-picked wine at check-in, a complimentary hot and local breakfast delivered via contactless room service, a fitness studio, locally roasted coffee, and use of the fashionable lounge and communal workspace at the flagship hotel.
“We’re expanding in response to the volume of special event and wedding guests we host consistently at Hotel Trundle,” says Munse. “These satellite rooms can cater specifically to those guests and fill a niche with high demand in our market. It also aligns with our model of adapting historic buildings and converting spaces that weren’t hotels into stylish, modern lodgings that are downtown and convenient to the venues and restaurants of the Main Street District.”
