The Assistant Director for Academic Support will manage and direct multiple programs and initiatives to support students’ academic achievement and persistence. This position provides leadership and focused coordination to support evidence-based learning and related strategies to aid students’ progression. In addition, this position will be responsible for the supervision of identified academic support personnel.

  • Supervise professional staff and student workers (academic life coaches, tutors, SI Leaders, Testing Center) by applying appropriate management principles according to university policy and procedures, completing EPMS in a timely and accurate manner, and monitoring employee progress towards goal attainment. Communicates expectations and provides feedback to assist employees with performance improvement, professional development, and skills/competency development.
  • Supervise Academic Life Coaching program that provides individual guidance and academic coaching/advising for students with known risk factors such as conditional admits, probation, and readmission from suspension. Follow USC Upstate academic life coaching policies and procedures. Train staff on appropriate academic support and interventions with students.
  • Coordinate tutoring and supplemental instruction (SI) programs each semester (including summer months) to recruit, train, and evaluate student employees serving as peer educators. Create the schedule and room reservation for SI and group tutoring sessions. Develop collaborative relationships with participating faculty and academic departments. Partner with other units on campus, such as the Writing Center, Disability Services, and Athletics.
  • Provide overall leadership and management of coaching, tutoring, and SI through strategic planning and assessment. Promote services to students and coordinate appropriate software use (Quad C and Starfish).
  • Administer Student Success Center outreach efforts, including event planning, workshops/presentations, and communications (such as newsletter). Promote effective learning strategies based on evidence-based practices. Partner with other campus offices to provide educational opportunities related to student success initiatives and programming.
  • Serve on the University 101 Curriculum Committee. Assist in designing University 101 curriculum modules and UNIV 101 instructors’ training. Teach a section of University 101.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Student Services, Educational Psychology, Education or a related field required with a minimum of 3 years experience in higher education, academic support, learning science or related field. Assessment and reporting experience. A successful background check is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience with supervising and training employees, prior experience with evaluative programming, prior experience with adult learning.

Salary:
$54,165 – $65,000; Salary commensurate with education and experience.
