Jury Duty Scam Resurfaces in Laurens County

September 7, 2024

The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) is warning residents about the resurgence of a familiar scam targeting local citizens. Scammers are calling individuals, falsely claiming to be employees of the LCSO, the Detention Center, or the Clerk of Court. They often use the names of actual deputies or investigators to add a layer of credibility to their scheme.

The scam works by convincing the recipient that they have missed jury duty or have an active warrant. The caller then pressures the individual to provide personal information or even demands payment to “resolve” the issue. In some cases, the scammers can manipulate caller ID to make it appear as though the call is coming from an official LCSO number.

Laurens County Sheriff Don Reynolds wants the public to be aware of the scam and urges residents to remain vigilant. “We will never call you about missing jury duty, active warrants, or demand any form of payment over the phone,” Sheriff Reynolds said. “If you receive one of these calls, do not give out any personal information and hang up immediately.”

Residents who suspect they have been targeted by the scam are encouraged to contact the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office directly by dialing 864-984-4967. Sheriff Reynolds emphasized, “When in doubt, always call us directly to verify any claims. It’s better to be safe than to fall victim to these scammers.”

The LCSO is working diligently to stop these scams and protect the community. Always remember to stay alert, and never hesitate to contact law enforcement if you have concerns.
