LDHS Livestock Judging Team Wins the Junior Division of the State 4-H Livestock Judging Competition

April 29, 2022

The LDHS Livestock Judging Team recently won the State 4-H Livestock Judging Event held in Clemson.

There were six teams competing in the Junior Division with four students per team. The Laurens High Team finished first and individually had three out of the top five scores. Cayden Garrett was the Fourth High Individual, Walt Addy was Third High Individual, and Anna Barrett Penland was the Overall High Individual winner.

Students competing in this competition had to judge six classes of livestock with four animals per class. Animals are judged based on either market value or breeding qualities. Students have to study the class and place them in the order from best to worst. The students also take notes on two of the classes and give reasons to the judges which defends their reasons of why they placed the class based on their observations.

This competition provides valuable life skills by teaching students to be confident in their decisions and being able to defend their opinions. The public speaking experience will benefit students through adulthood.

We are very proud of our students’ dedication by staying after school and working hard to be successful at this Livestock Judging Contest!
