Lecture guests to discuss American politics in the “Age of Obama”

Are fundamental changes under way in American politics and government? What are the prospects for effective action on the critical issues facing the United States in 2013 and beyond?
Few people are better qualified to address these questions than Frank J. Fahrenkopf, Jr., former chairman of the Republican National Committee under President Ronald Reagan, and Don Fowler, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee under President Bill Clinton.
“Frank Fahrenkopf and Don Fowler have many years of experience at the highest levels of American politics and both maintain close ties to national leaders,” said Bo Moore, dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Fahrenkopf will speak at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17 in Duckett Hall Auditorium at The Citadel. It is free and open to the public. The program is jointly sponsored by the Department of Political Science and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Fahrenkopf is currently chief executive officer of the American Gaming Association where he is the national advocate for the commercial casino-entertainment industry and is responsible for positioning the association to address related regulatory, political and educational issues. A lawyer by profession, Fahrenkopf gained prominence during the 1980s, when he served as national chairman of the Republican Party during the presidency of Ronald Reagan. He continues to serve in a variety of political positions – he is co-chairman of the Commission on Presidential Debates and a member of the board of the International Republican Institute, which he founded in 1984.
Fowler will moderate the lecture and participate in the discussion afterward. He has served as National Chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1995 to 1997. He is a political science professor and businessman from South Carolina who has occupied numerous positions of leadership within the Democratic Party, including that of South Carolina state party executive director, state party chair and CEO of the 1988 Democratic National Convention in Atlanta. His term as National Chairman included the 1996 presidential election between Bill Clinton and Bob Dole.
