Newberry College Theater Department to present “Little Shop of Horrors”
March 30, 2011Five performances of popular play start this week
NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry College Theater Department will present five performances of the popular play Little Shop of Horrors over the next few weeks, beginning with three on-campus performances this week.
The play will be performed at the Wiles Chapel Theatre at 8 p.m. this Thursday, Friday and Saturday (March 31 through April 2). The play will also be shown at the Newberry Opera House on Thursday, April 14, and Friday, April 15, at 8 p.m. each night.
In the play, a down-and-out skid row floral assistant becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Soon Audrey II grows into an ill-tempered, manipulative, R&B-singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite, finally revealing itself to be an alien creature poised for global domination!
Based on the low-budget cult film by Roger Corman, Little Shop of Horrors became one of the longest-running Off-Broadway shows of all time. Opening in 1982, this affectionate spoof of 1950s sci-fi movies has become a household name, thanks to a highly successful film version and a score by the songwriting team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, who redefined the animated musical film with Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. Charming, tuneful and hilarious, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, Little Shop of Horrors never fails to entertain.
Please note: This performance is rated PG-13 for mild profanity and mild violence. Please consider whether you feel the content is appropriate for children under age 13.
