Parent Leadership Conference scheduled for Feb. 12-14 at South Carolina State University
January 14, 2010ORANGEBURG, SC – January 14, 2010 – “Parents Leading the Way” will be the focus of the 2010 South Carolina Parent Leadership Conference to be held February 12-14 on the campus of South Carolina State University.
Open to parents, other primary caregivers of children and to professionals who work with families, the statewide conference will recognize and celebrate parent leadership in the home, school and community.
Featuring workshops on topics of current interest to parents, guest speakers, a luncheon, parent recognition and exhibits, the conference is a joint project of the South Carolina Department of Education, the South Carolina School Improvement Council, Parents Anonymous® of SC, Inc., SC State, ProParents, The Children’s Trust of SC, SC Parent Information and Resource Centers, and the state’s Parent Teacher Association.
Topics for workshops include:
• bullying prevention and recognition;
• childhood health and nutrition;
• sibling rivalry;
• family financial management;
• Internet safety;
• parents as legislative advocates;
• character education;
• suicide prevention;
• special education and intervention;
• parental advocacy in the education system; and
• sessions in both English and Spanish on the American education system and improving literacy in the home.
The conference also will highlight February’s statewide observance of National Parent Leadership Month, when organizations recognize parents demonstrating leadership and holding leadership roles in their communities, homes and children’s schools.
Registration for the conference is $75 and runs through February 1. Pre-registration is required because there will be no onsite registration. A limited number of scholarships to cover the cost of conference registration, hotel accommodations and child care are available on a first-come, first-served basis for parents of children in Title I schools.
