January 16, 2008COLUMBIA, SC – January 16, 2009 – The South Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants (SCACPA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Sylvia Guy Kitchens, CPA as its 2008 president.
A member of SCACPA since 1991, Kitchens is the Senior Consultant and Legislative Liaison for the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia. Originally from Augusta, Georgia, she graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of South Carolina with a BS in Business Administration and has lived and worked in Columbia since 1979. As a member-driven public service initiative for 2008, Kitchens has chosen financial literacy as her platform topic.
Through SCACPA programs like CPA Ambassadors and Start Saving South Carolina, and national programs like the Ad Council’s Feed the Pig™ campaign and Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy, Kitchens hopes to lead SCACPAs’ 3700+ members in providing critical education and resources for South Carolina citizens.
“With the financial crisis facing our nation, CPAs have a greater responsibility to the public than ever,” Kitchens said.
“Financial literacy is vital to the economic success of our neighbors and our nation. Our Association has CPA volunteers ready to help educate the public with personal finance programs and resources.”
Invest in Your Future: Promoting Financial Literacy in SC is the tag line for SCACPAs’ 2008 public awareness campaign.
“Home foreclosures are at an all time high, and credit card debt is increasing while personal saving is on the decline. A basic, personal financial education is essential to changing these trends and securing the economic future of our citizens.”
Kitchens serves on the board of the United Way Association of South Carolina and the South Carolina Financial Literacy Board of Trustees, and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the SC Government Finance Officers Association.
Prior to her appointment as president, Kitchens served as SCACPAs’ Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, Member-at-Large Director, Central Chapter President, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer and CPE Coordinator, as well as involvement in numerous committees and task forces.
Founded in 1915, SCACPA is a statewide organization representing more than 3,700 CPAs and accounting professionals. The Association is governed by a 20-member Board of Directors elected by the membership, while programs and services are facilitated by a nine-member professional staff in West Columbia.
