Sexual-Harassment Law Topic of Knowlton Lecture

COLUMBIA, SC – February 11, 2009 – University of Michigan law professor Catharine MacKinnon, an authority on sexual-harassment law, will deliver the 2009 Charles Knowlton Law and Liberal Arts Lecture at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, at the University of South Carolina School of Law auditorium.
The lecture, titled “Women’s Status, Men’s States,” is free and open to the public.
MacKinnon, a long-term visiting scholar at Harvard Law School, is the Elizabeth A. Long Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School. Author of several books on feminism and women’s issues, she is recognized as a pioneer in the efforts to recognize sexual harassment as a legal term and has advocated for the recognition of pornography as a violation of human rights.
Representing Bosnian women, MacKinnon won, with co-counsel, a damage award of $745 million in August 2000 in Kadic v. Karadzic, which first recognized rape as an act of genocide.
