South Carolina’s Airbnb hosts earned over $34 million in 2016

March 2, 2017

Airbnb, the world’s leading community driven hospitality company, announced that its South Carolina host community earned a combined $34.5 million in supplemental income while experiencing 209,000 guest arrivals to the state in 2016.

These guest arrivals to the state represent an astounding 150 percent year-over-year growth. This comes as South Carolina residents increasingly embrace the home sharing platform as an opportunity to earn supplemental income and make ends meet. Airbnb’s South Carolina host community grew 100 percent to 3,800 in 2016.

For many hosts in South Carolina, home sharing is an economic lifeline. The annual earnings for a typical host are $5,900. Forty-one percent (41%) of those who host in the state are over the age of 50, and 59 percent of all hosts are women. The extra money hosts earn often goes towards their mortgage, paying bills and supplementing fixed, retirement incomes.

Airbnb began collecting and remitting taxes on behalf of its South Carolina host and guest community in June 2016. During 2016, the government of South Carolina gained $2 million in tax revenue from the home sharing platform.

As part of Airbnb’s broader commitment to work with cities, the community-driven hospitality company collects and remits hotel, occupancy and tourist taxes on behalf of its hosts and guests in over 220 cities and communities globally. Since its first agreements were enacted in 2014, Airbnb has remitted over $175 million in tax revenue around the world.
