April 24, 2012

GAFFNEY, SC – Spartanburg Community College (SCC) is hosting the Cherokee County LEGO Robotics Competition, where middle and high school students participating in SCC’s LEGO Robotics program have teamed up to build functional robots to compete in the “Green City Challenge.”

Students from each Cherokee County middle and high school, as well as the Boys & Girls Club and Bethel Baptist Church will put their robots to the test by completing challenges centered around renewable energy. SCC, Duke Energy and The Timken Foundation are sponsoring this free event.

The LEGO Robotics Program is a national discovery science program that uses robots to foster young students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and math.

“The LEGO Robotics Program has proven to be very successful in exponentially increasing students’ interests in advanced technology,” explained Daryl Smith, director of SCC’s Cherokee County Campus. “We expect this interest will lead them to seek higher educational opportunities in industrial programs, like mechatronics, to prepare them for careers in this field.”

SCC, Duke Energy and The Timken Foundation share a common goal of creating a future technology-proficient workforce that meets the growing demand for advanced manufacturing employees in South Carolina.
