Spartanburg engineer named semi-finalist in national New Faces of Engineering program

February 15, 2010

SPARTANBURG, SC – February 15, 2010 – CH2M HILL announces that Ryan Acierno, an electrical engineer in the firm’s industrial and advanced technology group in Spartanburg, has been named a New Faces of Engineering semi-finalist by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE-USA). The honorees in this national program are the “best of the best”—the next generation of engineers whose innovation, leadership and commitment to excellence are helping to better our world and inspire young people to consider a career in engineering.

“These honorees exemplify CH2M HILL’s values of client service with a strong focus on safety and sustainability and giving back to our communities and profession,” says Lee McIntire, CH2M HILL CEO. “We are very proud of all 41 of CH2M HILL’s New Faces of Engineering nominees. Their passion, commitment, and leadership represent us well in the quest to inspire a future generation of engineering talent.”

As a LEED accredited professional, Acierno contributed his LEED knowledge to a large Photovoltaic manufacturing plant in New Mexico by providing design and on-site construction support. He is known for his commitment to continually improving his engineering and safety skills to better help his colleagues, clients, and CH2M HILL. Acierno is active in the community and volunteers with the Boy Scouts to help scouts earn their engineers’ badge and with the local Relay for Life events to benefit the American Cancer Society.

“I have been interested in electronics ever since I can remember,” said Acierno. “As a kid I was always taking things apart and messing around with the wires. When I reached high school they offered an electronics elective class which I signed up for, the teacher was excellent and I knew once I finished that class I was going into electrical engineering once I reached college.”

When asked about his favorite part of being an engineer, Acierno replied, “The opportunity to design a building and then go to the site and help with construction support. It is neat to actually see something you designed become a working product. With so many different projects coming through our office, there is always the opportunity to travel and see some new places.”

Acierno received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of South Carolina in Columbia.
