Spartanburg Science Center to celebrate Engineering Day

February 10, 2016
Spartanburg Science Center, located at Chapman Cultural Center in Spartanburg, will celebrate Engineering Day Saturday, Feb. 20, 11 a.m.–3:15 p.m. Several engineers will share activities with the public, and there will be hands-on STEM activities for parents and kids. Some of the engineers attending include Frank Clanton from BASF and Hal Carson, a retired engineer. The contributions that engineers have made to society are numerous. An engineer can make anywhere from $52,990 to $125,810 a year, and there are many careers in this field, including civil, environmental, chemical, electrical, and nuclear engineers.
 .
Being an engineer requires a lot of creativity. Engineers come up with solutions ranging from developing a system to provide clean water, to creating new iPhones and the apps that go with them. This event will be a time to educate and inspire tomorrow’s generation about this fundamental career.
 .
Spartanburg Science Center is the only hands-on education center in Spartanburg connecting students to STEM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. “We are dedicated to offering programs in all fields of science that are interactive, student participatory and provide fun kinetic experiences for learners of every age,” the Center’s business manager Mary Levens said. The Center is a non-profit organization that was established in 1978, with a primary goal to foster an appreciation of and respect for the world around us. Science Center offers hands-on programs in all major fields of science and have a vast collection of exhibits for all ages.
 .
Spartanburg Science Center holds these types of events several times during the year, with the intent of highlighting a science-related topic while incorporating fun elements to get both kids and their parents more involved and interested in science, nature, and technology. The Engineering Day event is held every year, each with a new theme. The theme this year is Engineers Make a World of Difference. This event is free and open to the public. Come and join the fun while learning about engineers and how they shape the modern world.
