The Citadel’s Daniel Library Friends Book and Lecture Series

Created in 1996, the Library Friends Book brings noted authors and lecturers to the Charleston area. All lectures are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted, and begin at 6:30 p.m. in Bond Hall Room 165 at The Citadel. For more information call 843-953-7691.
Feb. 8 – “A Vision of Lowcountry Culture”

Distinguished artist Jonathan Green will present an illustrated talk with a colorful look into the heart of Gullah culture.

Feb. 22 – “Controlled Crash”
Author and 1961 Citadel graduate Eldon Brown will use his personal knowledge of freight aviation to inspire and delight in an illustrated talk from his new book Controlled Crash.

March 8 – “The Cherokees, President Jackson and the Trail of Tears”
Charleston Post and Courier reporter and columnist Brian Hicks will vividly present the drama, suspense and pathos of the story of the Cherokees from his new book Toward the Setting Sun: John Ross, the Cherokees, the Trail of Tears. A book signing will follow the lecture.

March 15 – Library Friends Gala
A 5 p.m. reception, lecture and book signing will feature Class of 1967 classmates Pat Conroy and John Warley. Conroy’s latest book is “My Reading Life” while Warley will highlight his latest book “Bethesda’s Child.” A book signing will follow the lecture. Tickets are $50 each. April 12 – “Pushing, Puffing and Placing Precocious People”
Tandy Rice, Class of 1961 and a Nashville entertainment manager, will tell the dramatic story of such famous protégés as Dolly Parton and Hank Williams.

April 26 – “The Story of former Georgia Gov. Marvin Griffin”
Scott Buchanan, assistant professor of political science, will bring history alive by telling the story of Marvin Griffin, Citadel Class of 1929 and governor of Georgia from 1955-1959. A book signing will follow the lecture.
