The SCPCSD approves four innovative charter schools to bridge the achievement gap and put all kids first

April 24, 2023

The South Carolina Public Charter School District (SCPCSD) Board of Trustees approved four new charter schools today, providing students and families with additional educational options. The approved schools are Movement School in North Charleston, Carolus Online Academy, and GREEN Charter Schools in Simpsonville and Taylors.

Chairman John Payne of the Board of Trustees said, “Besides hiring a superintendent and approving a budget, one of our primary responsibilities is creating quality charter schools to give children and parents an educational choice. And that’s what we did today. With the approval of four new schools across the state of South Carolina, we give students and parents education freedom by creating quality charter schools in these communities.”

Movement School will serve K-8 students, while Carolus Online Academy will offer personalized online virtual learning for students across the state utilizing cutting-edge technology. GREEN Charter Schools, already operating successful schools in the upstate, the midlands, and the lowcountry, will extend its model to Taylors and Simpsonville.

Superintendent Chris Neeley stated, “Today marks a milestone as we enthusiastically welcome four exceptional charter school applicants into our educational family, bringing cutting-edge and purposeful personalized learning models in a variety of formats for the next generation of charter school students in South Carolina. Our focus is on putting all kids first and bridging the achievement gap between low and high-performing students, and these new schools will help us achieve that goal.”

The schools are dedicated to bridging the achievement gap between low and high-performing students and are scheduled to open in the next two years.
