Town of Chapin and the American Legion Post 193 host Memorial Day ceremony

May 23, 2023

Town of Chapin Mayor Al Koon announced that the Town of Chapin along with American Legion Post 193 will jointly host a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 29, at the Chapin Town Hall. The ceremony will start at 10:00 a.m. Memorial Day is a solemn day of remembrance for everyone who has died serving in the American Armed Forces.

Please join our Chapin community in honoring our fallen service men and women at a Memorial Day Observance. This outdoor event will be held in front of the Town Hall Building at the flag pole. There is limited seating available but you are welcome to bring chairs and it is handicapped accessible.

Immediately following the outdoor ceremony there will be an indoor reception. We invite members of the public to share images, names and ranks of those that have been killed in action as a way to publically acknowledge their sacrifice and share in remembrance of their life. Images and information can be sent to Dylan Francis at [email protected].

The keynote address will be given by Lieutenant Colonel Sarah Whitten. Lieutenant Colonel Whitten currently serves as the professor of Military Science at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. Prior to her current assignment, Lieutenant Colonel Whitten was stationed in a number of places worldwide. Lieutenant Colonel Whitten is the sister of Captain Daniel Whitten who was killed in action in Afghanistan on his third deployment in four years.

The Town of Chapin would like to extend a special thanks to Gold Star families, local Scouts, members of Chapin American Legion Post 193 and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 193, Chapin High School students, local business who donated time and supplies, our Veterans, and to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service to America.
