Two Richland One educators have graduated from the South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program. Dr. Charnice Starks-Ray, work-based learning consultant in Richland One’s Office of Career and Technical Education, and A.C. Flora High School social studies teacher Bailey Melvin were two of 15 educators from across South Carolina who graduated from the program.

The program is an innovative multi-year program designed to increase the number of teachers incorporating personal finance education into their classrooms.

“This achievement is important because financial literacy is the foundation that guides many of our decisions and well-being. This program has strengthened my financial knowledge and allowed me to educate students on economic opportunities that will occur throughout life,” said Dr. Starks-Ray.

Melvin was also recognized as the South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program’s Educator of the Month for September 2022.

“Being a South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teacher who provides quality instruction to students and other teachers is such an honor,” said Melvin. “Financial literacy is a lifelong skill that will help students navigate adulthood and provide them with the tools necessary to achieve their goals.”

South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis launched the South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program in January 2020 to provide financial incentives, specialized training and financial literacy curriculum resources to K-12 teachers at no cost to schools.
