Verizon Wireless Boosts Network Coverage For Spectators At The PGA Championship

August 7, 2012

CHARLESTON, SC – August 7, 2012 – Verizon Wireless has enhanced 3G and 4G LTE network coverage for the 94th PGA Championship on August 6-12 at The Ocean Course on Kiawah Island, SC to accommodate the 210,000 spectators and PGA officials attending the golf tournament. Verizon has deployed two Cell on Wheels (COW) units to the area, which are self-contained mobile cell sites capable of processing thousands of calls and data transmissions simultaneously in the area to ensure that attendees are able to access the internet, social media apps and email on their mobile devices without network interruptions or delays.

As stated in the official tournament guide, tournament attendees can have their mobile devices with them as long as their phones are on silent or vibrate. Wireless devices can be used for digital messaging and data while on the golf course, and there will be designated areas for mobile phone conversations.

“We know the golf enthusiasts attending the tournament need to stay connected to friends, family and work, so Verizon Wireless has reinforced our network to accommodate the surge of people on and around Kiawah Island,” said Jerry Fountain, President of Verizon for the Carolinas/Tennessee.
