Zoo shares positive accreditation findings

Onsite Inspection Completed in June, Final Report Expected in September

Fewer than 10% of all zoos in the United States are accredited. The Greenville Zoo is one of them, and staff takes its accreditation status very seriously. It’s a credential the zoo has held for more than 40 years.

“Zoo accreditation is the gold standard and a benchmark of excellence,” Parks, Recreation and Tourism Director Tara Eaker said. “It ensures our commitment to exceptional animal welfare, fosters public trust and reinforces our dedication to preserving wildlife and education.”

Zoo administrator Bill Cooper informed City Council that the accreditation organization, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), recently spent three days at the Greenville Zoo and found no major concerns. The visiting committee highlighted points of achievement in its report briefing, which precedes the formal hearing of the AZA Commission in September.

The AZA maintains rigorous, scientifically-based and transparent standards – examining a zoo’s entire operation, from animal welfare to veterinary care, as well as conservation, education, guest services, facilities, safety, staffing, finance and governance.
