56th Annual Piedmont Region III Science Fair Attracts Aspiring Young Scientists

SPARTANBURG, SC – February 23, 2011 – Aspiring young scientists will flock to the University of South Carolina Upstate campus where they will exhibit their projects at the 56th annual Piedmont Region III Science Fair on Wednesday, February 23. The event will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the University Readiness Center and is open to the public.

The Piedmont Region III Science Fair is sponsored and funded by the Spartanburg Rotary Club, and involves students in grades 1-12 who represent public, private and home schools located in the Cherokee, Chester, Lancaster, Spartanburg, Union, and York Counties.

The projects are to be divided by grades into the following academic categories during the competition:  Elementary Level (grades 1-4), Middle Level (grades 5-8), and Secondary Level (grades 9-12). Competition will occur in the following discipline categories: Behavioral and Social Science, Biology, Chemistry, General Science, Math and Computer Science, and Physics. Prizes to be awarded by the Spartanburg Rotary Club include gift cards and a trip to Los Angeles in May to compete at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Scholarships to USC Upstate will be awarded by the USC Upstate Foundation.

The Piedmont Region III Science Fair is hosted by USC Upstate with assistance provided by its School of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences, including the Division of Natural Sciences and Engineering and the Division of Mathematics and Computer Science. Assistance is also provided by professionals from the Spartanburg Rotary Club, Converse College, the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind, Foothills Equestrian Nature Center, Wofford College, Spartanburg Community College, Limestone College, Spartanburg Methodist College, Milliken Corporation, and Sealed Air/Cryovac, as well as individuals in the community with science and educational backgrounds.
