6th Annual Youth Leadership Summit Planned for August

SPARTANBURG, SC – August 5, 2011 – Youth from all over SpartanburgCounty have been invited to participate in the free Youth LeadershipSummit to be held on Thursday, August 11, 2011.   The primary purpose of the Summit is to encourage youth to develop leadership skills, makewise choices and become more involved in their community.

Taking place from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm at The Hangar, First BaptistChurch, the Summit offers youth ages 11-17 motivational speakers andinteractive workshops.  The morning will kick-off with a State of the Youth Address delivered by County Councilman Michael Brown. Following, we will havespecial guest Spark Plug speak to the youth to get them energized forthe day.

The sessions will focus on avoiding risky behaviors while encouraging advocacy of youth issues and volunteerism.  Topics include: Alcohol,Tobacco and Other Drug Issues, Community Involvement, PoliticalInvolvement, Leadership, Résumé Building, College & ScholarshipSearch, Arts & Activism, Going Green, and Healthy & ActiveLiving.

The Summit will include an Educational Market featuring statecolleges and universities, and youth-serving non-profits andorganizations. Spartanburg’s own Imagine That!, a youththeatrical improv group, will perform throughout the day.   Doorprizes-including a Nintendo DS3, XBOX Kinect or an iPad-will be awarded, and the event includes a free pizza lunch.

This event was conceptualized, initiated and organized by theSpartanburg Youth Council, a coalition of over 315 youth-concernedorganizations, non-profits, businesses, and individuals in theSpartanburg area.  It was created for the purpose of offering leadership training to Spartanburg’s young people and raising awareness of youthissues.
