A Surprising Insight to Our Love of Shiny Things

We all love shiny things, right?  Whether it’s sequins, glitter or glossy finishes they all seem to have some magical magnetic pull on us, and now thanks to some research we have a better understanding as to the reason why.

A new study published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology shows that our love for shiney things comes from our need for water.  A necessity for survival, it makes sense when you stop to think about it, but the supporting research is nice to have.

Since we’re in the season of glitter and gold and all things glistening here are a few of my favorite shiny pieces and how to work them into outfits perfect for your next holiday gathering that go beyond the traditional and expected:

1.   Tops.  Embellished sweatshirts are a huge trend this season and they are an easy way to bridge the gap between casual and formal attire.  If you already have a formal full skirt that you only wear on one or two annual occasions reinvent it with a sweatshirt and flats.  Another jovial way to don these tops is with plaid or printed formal pants.  This pairing works because the sweatshirt brings just enough comfort and counterbalance to the formal structure to create a well-rounded, fashionable ensemble that will put your fashion sense on display.

2.   Bottoms.  Whether you choose sequin pants; metallic skirts or any other variation in between there is no right or wrong way to let your bottoms shine.  If you’re worried about keeping that area disguised opt for solids over prints.  That detail matters more than the shine when it comes to a flattering palette.  It may help to think that shiny things reflect as well as they captivate, just like light reflecting makeup works to camouflage wrinkles and blemishes, so you shouldn’t be scared to ditch the traditional black bottoms for something more festive and fun.

3.   Accessories.  It’s easy to dress up basic outfits and pull out the sparkle with jewelry, handbags and shoes, but don’t forget about your makeup and other accessories like scarves.  If you want to covey the same formal polish but with a twist amp up your normal routine and mix a few shiny pieces together.   Combining a sparkle clutch with metallic shoes and earrings may sound like overkill, but they actually work well together as long as they complement each other.  When you try to match everything is when it gets a bit much.

If you’re worried about walking out of the house looking like a Christmas ornament that’s normal, but try to step back and let go.  It is the season to be festive after all.  Look at your outfit as a whole and stop critiquing each piece based on conservative norms.
