Anderson County unemployment rate drops to lowest level in 14 years

December 28, 2015

ANDERSON, SC – Anderson County’s unemployment rate for the month of November was recorded at 4.6%, according to figures released today by S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce.  This is the lowest rate measured in more than 14 years and is the 5th unemployment lowest rate in South Carolina.

The last time Anderson County’s unemployment rate was below 4.6% was in April of 2001, when the rate was measured at 4.4%

“We were hopeful that we’d see unemployment get below 5% this year, so this is especially wonderful news going into the Christmas holidays”, said Anderson County Council Chairman Tommy Dunn.  “Our new goal is to continue this momentum into the New Year and get that number down below 4%.”

“To reach this level, we are going to have to work closely with all of our community partners to get those still unemployed the training and other resources they need to find well-paying, meaningful occupations”, Dunn said.  “Now, it is more critical than ever that we connect with those persons who need updated job skills, and doing this will require the whole community to work as a team.”

In all, 83,786 Anderson residents were employed in November.  In November 2014, 81,244 residents were employed.  The over-the-year increase of more than 2,500 persons employed is consistent with trends observed over the last few months.

The number of unemployed persons in November was recorded at 4,082.
