Applications for District Five magnet, choice programs now available

January 25, 2016

Lexington-Richland School District Five is now accepting applications for its magnet and other choice programs.

The window for submitting a choice application opened on Monday, Jan. 25 at 8 a.m. and closes on Friday, Feb. 5, at 5 p.m. The preferred process is using the online application, which is now available on the district’s website and all school websites. Hard copy applications will also be available at District Five schools and the district office. They must be received at the district office (1020 Dutch Fork Road, Irmo, SC 29063) by Friday, Feb. 5 at 5 p.m.

District Superintendent Dr. Stephen Hefner said, “District Five is a school system where every choice is a great choice, and we are extremely proud to offer a wide array of quality magnet and other choice programs. We are committed to providing challenging curricula and educational options that prepare our students to compete in and contribute to a global society, and we look forward to seeing all the positive impacts of offering choice programs in District Five.”

Hundreds of students, parents and community members gathered at District Five Magnet Fairs in November and January to learn more about magnet offerings in the district. In September 2013, District Five magnet programs received a boost from a $10.3 million federal grant. New school magnet themes were developed in response to a community-wide survey administered in fall 2012.

District Five magnet offerings include: Spring Hill High School Career Pathways Magnet, Dutch Fork Elementary School Academy of Environmental Sciences, The Leader In Me program at H. E. Corley Elementary, Irmo Middle School International Academic Magnet (iAM), Irmo High School International School of the Arts, IB (International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme) at Irmo High,  LEAP (Leaphart Engineering Arts Program) at Leaphart Elementary, and Seven Oaks Elementary School MEDIA (Mass Communications, Engagement, Digital Media, Interactive Learning, Academics) Magnet.

The application deadline already has passed for two other District Five magnet programs. The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program at Dutch Fork High and the Escolares Academy at Harbison West Elementary are criteria-based programs with their own application processes.

District Five CHOICE includes the option to select any school in the district that has space available to accommodate additional students or to select a magnet school or magnet program. In addition to magnet programs, District Five “School of Choice” options currently include: the Academy For Success, Irmo Elementary School, Nursery Road Elementary School, Oak Pointe Elementary School, River Springs Elementary School, CrossRoads Intermediate School, Dutch Fork High School and Chapin High School. More information on District Five CHOICE programs and the district’s online choice application are available at www.lexrich5.org/.
