Association for the Blind & Visually Impaired – Charleston client receives Volunteer of the Year

February 22, 2017

The Association for the Blind & Visually Impaired – Charleston (ABVI) announced that on February 14, 2017, Mayor Tecklenburg and Keep Charleston Beautiful presented Sebastian DeModica with the Reverend Alma Dungee Volunteer of the Year award for 2016. Sebastian is a longtime client of ABVI and a participant in ABVI’s Employee Development track of their Own Your Life program where he is fine-tuning skills that will help him to reenter the workforce since losing his vision.

ABVI’s Own Your Life (OYL) program helps blind and visually impaired individuals in the Charleston Tri-County area achieve independence in their personal lives and develop skills to gain employment. OYL benefits blind individuals of wide-ranging abilities and ambitions and has two tracks; the Personal Enrichment track for clients wanted to develop independent living skills, and the Employee Development track for clients interested in employment. The Employee Development track is individualized for each client depending on his or her goals. Classes for Employee Development participants include computer training, interview and resume training, daily living skills, Braille, Orientation and Mobility, assistive technology training and job-readiness training.

ABVI is proud of Sebastian’s volunteer work with Keep Charleston Beautiful. Keep Charleston Beautiful has worked tirelessly to preserve Charleston’s picturesque scenery for 20 years. They are affiliated with Keep American Beautiful and PalmettoPride and a division of the City of Charleston Department of Parks. They rely on the help of volunteers like Sebastian to keep Charleston clean and beautiful.
