COLUMBIA, SC – The redesigned Ben Lippen School computer lab is truly state-of-the-art. It includes a bank of 24 new iMacs installed with standard software for graphic design, video editing, and photography. But it also includes robotics and 3D printing programs.

David Rios, Ben Lippen dean of Computer Science and Pre-Engineering, says the new lab opens the opportunity for design, drafting, 3D modeling and 3D printing to be incorporated into Ben Lippen robotic classes.

“Students will be given projects requiring them to 3D print robotic parts that they designed in class using 3D modeling software,” Rios said. “The robotic classes will participate in First Tech Challenge (FTC) competitions and some intricate in-class projects.”

After the iMacs were installed with the latest technology, Ben Lippen director of Instructional Technology, Jacob Huss says something was still missing.

“We had the state of the art equipment but not the overall look and feel of a modern computer lab,” Huss said. “So, we reached out to Ben Lippen alumnus Josh Cox to design the new lab arrangement to match our technology set up.”

Cox, who graduated from Ben Lippen in 2007, is owner and lead designer at Bricker & Beam, a custom furniture company in West Columbia specializing in contemporary design with heirloom-quality craftsmanship. He says that coming back to work with Ben Lippen on the new computer lab was fun personally and professionally.

“I really enjoyed seeing all of new changes to the school and having the opportunity to be involved in its progress,” Cox said. “We hope the new design is well-received and look forward to future partnership opportunities.”

Ben Lippen School is a Christian, college preparatory school of over 700 students in grades Pre-K through 12, and is a ministry of Columbia International University.
