Berkeley County Students Surpass State SAT Averages

MONCKS CORNER, SC – Berkeley County seniors taking the SAT, a national college admissions exam, surpassed the state average this year. The average composite score for district students taking the exam was 1438 — 9 points above the state average score of 1429 — and 5 points above last year’s score of 1433. Berkeley County has consistently exceeded the state average in all three tested areas during the past four years.
“We are thrilled to see the gains our students are making again this year,” said Dr. Kevin O’Gorman, the district’s Associate Superintendent of Instruction and Accountability. “These scores reflect the hard work the students and teachers are putting in to round out their educations and improve their chances of being accepted into their post-secondary school of choice, the military or any of the burgeoning high tech firms in the area. Scoring above the state and national average greatly improves their opportunity for acceptance or hiring.”
District high schools hold a variety of pre-exam events to get students prepared and motivated for the exam, including practice tests, online sessions, testing rallies, test boot camps and more. “We are doing whatever it takes to prepare our students to perform well on the test,” O’Gorman said.
The SAT consists of three parts: Critical Reading, Mathematics and Writing. All scores range between 200 and 800 in each area, for a possible total of 2,400.
