Berkeley High to Host State Forensics Tournament

MONCKS CORNER, SC – Berkeley High School, located at 406 West Main Street, Moncks Corner, will host the 2015 South Carolina Forensic Coaches Association’s State Tournament on Friday and Saturday, March 6 and 7. Friday’scompetition will begin at 4 p.m. and Saturday’s at 8 a.m. with an awards ceremony at the end of Saturday’s competition.

 

Approximately 200 students will compete in the two-day event. Teams from Berkeley High, Fort Dorchester High, Hillcrest High, Irmo High, Lexington High, Mauldin High, R.B. Stall High, Riverside High, Waccamaw High and Williston-Elko High Schools will participate along with Southside High Center for International Studies and Bob Jones Academy.

Students have the opportunity to compete in several different categories, 17 in all. The categories include Novice Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Public Forum Debate, Congressional Debate, International & U.S. Extemporaneous, Impromptu Speaking, Original Oratory, Dramatic Interpretation & Humorous Interpretation, Prose Interpretation & Poetry Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Children’s Literature, Novice Reading, Declamation, Expository Speaking and the SPAR Debate.

More than 100 people from Berkeley County School District, Santee Cooper, Boeing, Berkeley Electric Co-Op, College of Charleston and several other companies and organizations in the area have volunteered to judge and assist students.

Speech and debate helps students: improve reading, listening, speaking and writing skills; develop critical-thinking skills and intellectual curiosity; increase engagement with other students and excel academically and personally.

The goal of the South Carolina Forensic Coaches Association is to provide the opportunities of speech and debate to as many students as possible. The association acts as a resource to members schools, recruits new member schools and helps coordinate and schedule state tournaments.
