COLUMBIA, SC – Statement in Support of Gov. Haley’s Call to Remove the Confederate Flag from State House Grounds from David Pankau, President and CEO, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina:
BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina is a state-based company that has proudly served the communities of South Carolina for nearly 70 years. We employ your family, your friends and your neighbors. The events of the past week have been shocking and painful for all of us. And, while we will never understand the darkness and the hatred that caused nine good people to lose their lives, we take comfort and pride in the knowledge that South Carolina stands united in overcoming—together—this tragic loss.
It is in that spirit that we stand with Gov. Nikki Haley in her call to remove the Confederate flag from the State House grounds. While we understand the flag represents the values of courage and self –reliance, and honors the ancestors of many in our state, it is also a symbol of pain and divisiveness. We must move forward. Removing that painful symbol of a divided past is a fitting tribute to those who died last week in Charleston.
