Bob Jones University Confers Honorary Doctorate

May 14, 2015

GREENVILLE, SC – At its 88th commencement exercises Fri., May 8, Bob Jones University honored S. Flay Allen of Greenville, lifelong missionary to Spanish-speaking people on two continents, by conferring on him an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree.

Prior to his graduation from BJU, in the summer of 1957, Allen traveled on a student evangelistic team to Cuba—during which time, God called him to the mission field.  From that point on, missions has been his life.

Following graduation, Allen’s first mission field was Mexico.  He later served in Santiago, Chile, where he was involved in church planting, teaching in Bible institutes, assisting in evangelistic campaigns and directing music camps.

When Spain passed a religious liberty law opening the door to missionaries, he moved from Chile to Spain and spent the next 42 years there—with the exception of a two-year leave of absence to help establish the Christian University of the Americas in Monterrey, Mexico.

Allen and his team of BJU graduates planted three churches in Spain, operated a Christian school for 10 years, founded a Bible institute, and produced several Christian musical recordings in Spanish.  In cooperation with Majesty Music in Greenville, they translated and published numerous choral books and cantatas.  Their largest music project was a 600+ page Spanish hymnbook.

After 52 years of foreign missionary service, Allen and his wife Margaret retired in 2013 and are assisting a Hispanic church in Easley, South Carolina, with its choir and orchestra.
