December 7, 2016

Today Secretary of State Mark Hammond officially recognized Burroughs & Chapin Company, Inc. as a South Carolina Centennial Business.  This honor is reserved for domestic business entities that have been in good standing with the Secretary of State’s Office for 100 years or more.

Secretary Hammond honored Burroughs & Chapin at its headquarters in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  “Because of its tenacity and dedication to economic development, Burroughs & Chapin is a household name in South Carolina.  Burroughs & Chapin is one of a select group of businesses that originated in our state and that have continued to grow over the past one hundred years or more.  I am proud to recognize Burroughs & Chapin for its positive impact on the Grand Strand and on South Carolina as a whole.”

Burroughs & Chapin Company, Inc. was incorporated on July 15, 1895 and has been an iconic presence in the Myrtle Beach area for well over a century. It has been an economic driver in a multitude of industries including hospitality, golf, master-planned development, tourism attractions, commercial leasing and shopping center development.  Its best-known project-Broadway at the Beach-is a 350-acre shopping, entertainment, and dining complex that attracts over 14 million visitors each year. Broadway at the Beach is a past recipient of the South Carolina Governor’s Cup.

“When I first joined Burroughs & Chapin, its hundred year history as a privately owned company really impressed me,” said Jim Apple, president and chief executive officer of Burroughs & Chapin. “In many ways, the company was a visionary force in helping to develop the Myrtle Beach area into South Carolina’s leading tourism destination. Its leaders combined business innovation with profound philanthropic scope, donating land for public beach access, for a state park, for a convention center and for many churches and schools throughout the community. The company’s history was one of high character and its unique legacy was something I wanted to help preserve. I’m pleased to see the state of South Carolina taking a moment to recognize Burroughs & Chapin for the exceptional company that it is.”

Secretary Hammond is recognizing centennial businesses for their many contributions to the state.  “Centennial businesses serve a dual purpose of fostering growth and innovation while providing employment opportunities to the citizens of South Carolina.  We are grateful to businesses like Burroughs & Chapin for maintaining a strong presence in our state and for continuing to bolster our economy.”

Secretary Hammond will continue to publicly recognize centennial businesses located throughout the state and honor their contributions to South Carolina’s economic prosperity.
