Cainhoy Elementary/Middle awarded Chromebooks

November 2, 2015

MONCKS CORNER, SC – Cainhoy Elementary/Middle School (CEMS) was awarded 70 Dell Chromebooks by the Daniel Island Community Fund and Nucor Steel.

CEMS Principal, Anthony Dixon, said, “We are excited to receive Google Chromebooks from the Daniel Island Community Fund and Nucor Steel Berkeley. The addition of the Chromebooks will increase student engagement through blended learning.”

Middle school teachers at the school wrote a grant requesting funding for the Chromebooks to assist in creating a one-to-one learning environment for students. Middle school teachers have received training during professional development sessions since the summer of 2015 in blended learning, one-to-one teaching practices, and the integration of technology into the classroom to enhance student engagement and instruction.

Vice President of Community Services for Daniel Island Community Fund, Jane Baker, said, “The Daniel Island Community Fund is honored to have been able to partner again successfully with Nucor to provide updated technology to the students of Cainhoy Elementary and Middle School. Partnerships between the nonprofit, private and public sectors are essential to ensure that all students in the Lowcountry are on equal footing as they prepare to go to high school.”

Because of the partnership with Daniel Island Community Fund, Nucor Steel, and Berkeley County School District, CEMS now has a Chromebook for each student at the middle school, as well as a class set for all 3rd through 5th grade classes.

Vice President and General Manager at Nucor Steel, Giff Daughtridge, said, “Nucor is proud to support the awesome students and staff at Cainhoy Elementary and Middle Schools. We are always impressed by the hard work we see at CEMS. It is great to partner with the Daniel Island Community Fund to give these students every opportunity to meet their full potential. At Nucor, we understand the importance of teachers having the right tools and students getting full exposure to available technology in the classroom.”

“We appreciate this ongoing partnership and look forward continuing our work together,” said Dixon.
