CCSD receives $5,000 grant to continue tobacco use prevention education

May 16, 2016
The Charleston County School District (CCSD) has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the South Carolina Tobacco Collaborative for use in preventive education.

CCSD plans to use this funding for community education and health promotion, additional tobacco-free signage, promotional materials, and student-focused events aimed at raising awareness and promoting prevention.

“Part of promoting a safe and healthy environment for our students is to encourage a tobacco-free lifestyle,” said Melissa Prendergast, CCSD Director of Nursing Services. “We are thankful for the support of the South Carolina Tobacco Collaborative and look forward to expanding our tobacco use prevention programs in the coming year.”

About Vision 2016
Vision 2016 is the next phase of Charleston Achieving Excellence, CCSD’s flagship reform initiative. The five-year plan aims to dramatically improve the achievement of every student in Charleston County and includes three fundamental goals: 1) close the achievement gap, 2) elevate achievement overall and 3) raise the graduation rate. These goals were developed through a series of community engagement meetings in partnership with the CCSD Board of Trustees.
