Central Carolina Technical College Welding Program unveils 700-pound steel and metal sculpture at Scott’s Branch High School

February 22, 2016

On Thursday, February 18, Clarendon School District 1 and Scott’s Branch High School unveiled a permanent outdoor kinetic sculpture titled “Cellule One.” This sculpture was the result of a community partnership between the Central Carolina Technical College Welding Program and students from Scott’s Branch High School. This special event featured live music and choral performances by the Scott’s Branch band and choir.

The 700-pound steel and metal structure stands proudly at the front entrance to Scott’s Branch High School, displaying its brightly colored cellular units. “Cellule One” was made possible by an Arts Integration Model (AIM) grant from the South Carolina Department of Education. It was the brainchild of biology teacher Dorothy Pleasant and her students in March 2015. The idea was to create an outdoor classroom that combines the world of fine arts and cell biology.

The structure was skillfully designed and built by students in CCTC’s Welding Program under the direction of Program Manager Axel Reis. It was completed in August 2015 and moved to Scott’s Branch where high school students painted the structure, a task that took over six months to complete. The end result of this collaborative project is a stunning piece of art that not only the high school can enjoy, but also the entire community.

CCTC’s nationally recognized welding program prepares students for careers as welding engineers, sales engineers, manufacturing engineers, application engineering, project engineers and managers.
