CHAPIN, SC –  The Chapin Police Department announced its Explorer Program had a successful showing at the recent South Carolina Law Enforcement Explorers (SCALE) competition held last week in Summerville. The Summerville Police Department served as the host for multi-day competition that included 10 Explorer groups from around the state.

The Chapin competition team led by Chief Troy Crump and Officer Jason Byars included Capt. Corey Hallman, Sgt. Walker Allan Campbell, Cpl. Anna Polson, Explorer Blake Turney and Explorer Matt Protheroe. The team came home with several trophies, including second place honors for Team Active Shooter and third place for Team Drug Search Warrant and Team Courtroom Testimony. And in individual competition, Anna Polson placed second in Physical Agility Test Female and Troy Crump, Shari Driggers and Jason Byars placed first, second and third respectively in Advisor Pistol Shooting.

The Chapin Explorers are made up of area high school students who participate in community service projects and law enforcement activities as a way to learn more about careers in law enforcement. They assist the police department with traffic control, Labor Day festivities, National Night Out, Community Service Day and other public events the department undertakes throughout the year.

As part of the SCALE competition, the students participated in an array of challenges, including tests on legal issues, incident and accident report writing, and agility testing as well as scenarios that included routine and high rick traffic stops, courtroom testimony, building entry, active shooter, search warrants, and procedures for when an  officer goes down. The Explorers were given the calls as a two-man team and had to handle the call from beginning to end. All scenarios were judged. There was also a shooting competition for the Explorers and their police advisors.
